Body Scanners

The Dutch government says it will immediately begin using full body scanners on flights to the United States to prevent future terrorist attacks like the Christmas Day attempt by a young Nigerian. http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20091230/NEWS01/312300004/1001/NEWS

So what’s been the hold up in America?  There is no head of the TSA, they are more worried about the Union than security, and the ACLU and other civil liberties groups are having a hissy fit.  For one of the first times I can ever recall, I am all for more government regulating who gets to fly and am willing to give up some privacy to ensure the safety of air travel.  OMG, is it the year end holiday brain mush that just wrote more government??

For 6 years this technology has been out there, ready for use and could have prevented the uni-bomber and the underwear bomber from trying to blow up airplanes! 

On October 1, 2009 – “The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has revealed plans to install 150 body scanning machines for primary security screenings at airports across the country. The American Civil Liberties Union strongly opposes the expanded use of this invasive technology, which amounts to a virtual strip search and reveals strikingly graphic images of passengers’ bodies, including intimate medical details like colostomy bags or evidence of mastectomy. ….  By expanding the use of body scanning technology, the TSA is backing away from numerous assertions that it would use these machines only for secondary screenings. There are no laws or regulations limiting how the TSA uses these virtual strip searches, only policies they choose to adopt, and nothing to prevent the TSA from making it mandatory for all passengers to submit to these invasive and embarrassing searches, having their privacy stripped away in order to board a plane.

 “This new body scanning technology is a frontal assault on personal privacy, with virtual strip searches revealing private body parts and intimate medical details. Passengers expect privacy underneath their clothing and should not be required to display highly personal details of their bodies in order to fly.

Having a scan seems more friendly than a body cavity search.  If you find it humiliating to have a body scan simply don’t get on a plane.  Drive or stay home, one more seat for someone else on these over booked flights.  Take all the pictures you want of me when I fly.  So what if I got a glass eye, a pacemaker, a big penis with piercings, man boobs, a fat ass, a bag to pee in or all of the preceding on my body, whatever.  Get over yourself, you are a human and only God is perfect.  All of us have some kind of weird thing about ourselves, none of us should have the capacity to blow up a plane over the non use of technology that can stop this from happening.  Mandatory or selective, this is one case where I could care less- so long as it prevents the plane my family is getting on from falling from the sky.

The Associated Press says that “At least 19 U.S. airports have the scanners,” at http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1963465,ohare-airport-full-body-scanners-security-122909.article noting that Chicago’s O’Hare will be getting them mid-year. 

I would prefer not to have my fat, x-ray-ed ass posted on the Internet though.  Some sort of deterrent for illicitly copying and distributing the photos should probably be in order, with penalties severe enough to serve as a deterrent.  I wonder who stores the scan at the end of the day, is it now a permanent record, would an agency need a search warrant to use it in a court of law, etc., still some questions linger.  

I do see how the Pre-screening programs could be opportunities to find criminals.  Um, if that is a by product of better technology- so what?  Behind thousands on your child payments? A bad guy out on parole an not reporting?  Wanted on a felony?  Too frickin’ bad, don’t get anywhere near an airport unless you are a law abiding citizen.  Flying is a privilege not a right.   We’re not talking about an overdue library card or a bunch of parking tickets.  Look, finding criminals is not the intention behind scanning some one’s behind for problematic devices, but if it gets them away from being another potential public threat- then so be it. 

Take the extra billions in stimulus and stimulate the economy by making it safer.

Smile, someone takes your picture every time you walk into Wal-Mart, Target, Kohl’s, etc.  Got a Sam’s Club Card- your picture is on that.  Our local grocery store, in order to cash a payroll check, now requires not only a photograph but a fingerprint of two fingers, on two hands.  Every parent/grandparent/guardian/teacher and janitor at our local school is required to undergo a background check and be fingerprinted before walking in the door.  

If the private sector can match up your face to what you buy, to how often you visit, then the government ought to take every preventable measure to stop terrorism in it’s tracks  NOW, or hire the programmers at Wal-Mart to do it for them.

UPDATED August 5, 2010.  Now we know who stores the scan at the end of the day, the TSA!  The U.S. Marshals Service too. 

The TSA apparently requires all airport body scanners it purchases to be able to store and transmit images for “testing, training, and evaluation purposes.” (PDF)

A 70-page document (PDF) showing the TSA’s procurement specifications, classified as “sensitive security information,” says that in some modes the scanner must “allow exporting of image data in real time” and provide a mechanism for “high-speed transfer of image data” over the network.

The TSA maintains that body scanning is perfectly constitutional: “The program is designed to respect individual sensibilities regarding privacy, modesty and personal autonomy to the maximum extent possible, while still performing its crucial function of protecting all members of the public from potentially catastrophic events.”

Body Searches Ordered by TSA, DHS After Airline Attack

Peak air travel season, and the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY Transportation Security Administration changing the aviation rules for passengers, at least until December 30, 2009.

On Dec. 25, 2009, an individual on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253 set off a device and was subdued by passengers and crew. TSA wishes to acknowledge the heroic efforts of those individuals.  {sic- did they forget his name?}

As a result of this incident, TSA has worked with airline and law enforcement authorities, as well as federal, state, local, and international partners to put additional security measures in place to ensure aviation security remains strong. Subject: Security Directive
Number: SD 1544-09-06
Date: December 25, 2009

EXPIRATION: 0200Z on December 30, 2009

This Security Directive (SD) must be implemented immediately. The measures contained in this SD are in addition to all other SDs currently in effect for your operations.

INFORMATION: On December 25, 2009, a terrorist attack was attempted against a flight traveling to the United States. TSA has identified security measures to be implemented by airports, aircraft operators, and foreign air carriers to mitigate potential threats to flights.

APPLICABILITY: THIS SD APPLIES TO AIRCRAFT OPERATORS THAT CARRY OUT A SECURITY PROGRAM REGULATED UNDER 49 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS (CFR)1544.101(a).

ACTIONS REQUIRED: If you conduct scheduled and/or public charter flight operations under a Full Program under 49 CFR 1544.101(a) departing from any foreign location to the United States (including its territories and possessions), you must immediately implement all measures in this SD for each such flight.

1. BOARDING GATE

1. The aircraft operator or authorized air carrier representative must ensure all passengers are screened at the boarding gate during the boarding process using the following procedures. These procedures are in addition to the screening of all passengers at the screening checkpoint.

1. Perform thorough pat-down of all passengers at boarding gate prior to boarding, concentrating on upper legs and torso.
2. Physically inspect 100 percent of all passenger accessible property at the boarding gate prior to boarding, with focus on syringes being transported along with powders and/or liquids.
3. Ensure the liquids, aerosols, and gels restrictions are strictly adhered to in accordance with SD 1544-06-02E.

2. During the boarding process, the air carrier may exempt passengers who are Heads of State or Heads of Government from the measures outlined in Section I.A. of this SD, including the following who are traveling with the Head of State or Head of Government:

1. Spouse and children, or
2. One other individual (chosen by the Head of State or Head of Government)

3. For the purposes of Section I.B., the following definitions apply:

1. Head of State: An individual serving as the chief public representative of a monarchic or republican nation-state, federation, commonwealth, or any other political state (for example, King, Queen, and President).

2. Head of Government: The chief officer of the executive branch of a government presiding over a cabinet (for example, Prime Minister, Premier, President, and Monarch).

2. IN FLIGHT

1. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed:

1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior to boarding and during all phases of flight.
4. While over U.S. airspace, flight crew may not make any announcement to passengers concerning flight path or position over cities or landmarks.
5. Passengers may not have any blankets, pillows, or personal belongings on the lap beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.

AIRCRAFT OPERATOR ACKNOWLEDGMENT: The aircraft operator must immediately provide written confirmation to its assigned PSI indicating receipt of this SD.

AIRCRAFT OPERATOR dissemination required: The aircraft operator must immediately pass the information and directives set forth in this SD to all stations affected, and provide written confirmation to its PSI, indicating that all stations affected have acknowledged receipt of the information and directives set forth in this SD. The aircraft operator must disseminate this information to its senior management personnel, ground security coordinators, and supervisory security personnel at all affected locations. All aircraft operator personnel implementing this SD must be briefed by the aircraft operator on its content and the restrictions governing dissemination. No other dissemination may be made without prior approval of the Assistant Secretary for the Transportation Security Administration. Unauthorized dissemination of this document or information contained herein is prohibited by 49 CFR Part 1520 (see 69 Fed. Reg. 28066 (May 18, 2004).

APPROVAL OF ALTERNATIVE MEASURES: With respect to the provisions of this SD, as stated in 49 CFR 1544.305(d), the aircraft operator may submit in writing to its PSI proposed alternative measures and the basis for submitting the alternative measures for approval by the Assistant Administrator for Transportation Sector Network Management. The aircraft operator must immediately notify its PSI whenever any procedure in this SD cannot be carried out by a government authority charged with performing security procedures.

FOR TSA ACTION ONLY: The TSA must issue this SD immediately to the corporate security element of all affected U.S. aircraft operators.

FOR STATE DEPARTMENT: Retransmittal to appropriate foreign posts is authorized. Post must refer to STATE 162917, 201826Z Sep 01, Subject: FAA Security Directives and Information Circulars: Definitions and Handling, for specific guidance and dissemination.

The 23-year-old Nigerian man who claimed ties to al-Qaeda was charged this Saturday with trying to destroy a Detroit-bound airliner, just a month after his father warned U.S. officials of concerns about his son’s religious beliefs.http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091227/D9CRDL300.html

Imagine the balls it takes to alert authorities to the possibility your own kid is an assassin http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=5226 saying , “According to the local newspaper “Leadership Nigeria” Umar Mutallab, former chairman of First Bank and father of the alleged terrorist, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had alerted the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the INTERPOL and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) to his son’s weird behavior, especially after he sent a disturbing text message from Yemen. Umar Jr relocated to Yemen by late October this year, had sent a curious text to his parents – according to the report.

His father notified not one, but three governments of his son’s odd behavior and possible threat to the U.S.  Did anyone pay attention?  Nope.  Imagine the sadness in his family. If anyone of the three were watching him shame on them for not thwarting this cowardice act.

Abdulmutallab appeared on the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database maintained by the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, said a U.S. official who received a briefing. Containing some 550,000 names, the database includes people with known or suspected ties to a terrorist organization. However, it is not a list that would prohibit a person from boarding a U.S.-bound airplane. His name was added to the database in Novembers, according to an administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation that is ongoing….  

Virginia-based group that monitors militant messages called attention Saturday to a Dec. 21 video recording from an Al-Qaida Counterterrorism operative in Yemen who warned of a looming bombing in the U.S.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up an Amsterdam-Detroit airline flight Christmas Day demonstrated that “the system worked.”

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who has been charged with trying to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the jet, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”

Napolitano added that there was “no suggestion that [the suspect] was improperly screened.”

The system worked? You have to be joking. How Napolitano claimed it worked when a man was able to get a bomb on board a plane and almost set it off -were it not for a bad detonator and some heroic passengers?

 B I A T C H, YOU SHOULD BE FIRED. If for nothing else the disgraceful comment that the system worked.  IT FAILED.  YOU FAILED.

A half a million people made a list because they have some subjective hate for America and have presented some sort of evidence that they are willing to risk their lives in the process of killing Americans.  Some made this list in error- but this one asshole  gets on a plane to America and attempts detonation. 

How many on this TIDE database are boarding today?  Is it an Illuminati government pulling the strings for wars?  We now call bullshit.  There is no one but a bunch of disorganized government employees covering their ass just like in 911.  There may be the technology to read a license plate from space, know what kind and how many cigarettes you smoke and beers you drink, but if no one reports a terrorist driving the truck what use it is it.  Execute McVeigh before all the facts are in and it all goes away.  Except the memories.

9-11 Pissed Off About It All

It would not be appropriate to be a writer and not have something to say on the 8th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th.  What words are there to convey the immense destruction brought upon U.S. soil? 

Pissed off is my choice in words. 

Pissed that idiots could not put the pieces together ahead of time to prevent the attacks in the first place.  The Phoenix Memo clearly outlined unheeded warnings about Islamic terrorists training at US flight schools. http://www.thememoryhole.org/911/phoenix-memo/

Pissed that the US Justice Department’s Air Force Manual 10-100: Airman’s Manual, Aug 1999 version, and the manual “Managing Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents: An Executive Level Program for Sheriffs” which taught local law enforcement how to deal with terrorist attacks were a failure.  In practicing for an event like 911; the simplest statement to issue- “run” would have saved thousands.  Instead, they told people to stay in the buildings.

I am pissed that school’s do not teach what happened on 911 other than if you are lucky, on the day of September 11, 2001.  The twin towers poster should be hanging right next to the flag of The United States of America that the children face as they say The Pledge of Allegiance.  Look at it everyday and see the sacrifice.

I am pissed that there was no order to fly flags at half mast today in honor and respect of the day.  President Obama ordered that “US flags fly at half-staff at the White House, all public buildings, all military posts, all naval vessels, and diplomatic outposts around the globe until sunset on Sunday to honor Senator Edward M. I am pissed that ground zero is still a concrete hole in the ground.  While lease holders argue about the name of the building, eight years later, not much has been done.  The NY Port Authority should have made it a park. Period.

I am pissed that our President saw fit to bow to a Saudi King.

I am pissed that while there can never be complete safety, that America’s borders remain wide open to illegal immigrants, drug dealers and terrorists alike.

Costs for a wall that would run the entire length of the border might be as low as $851 million for a standard 10-foot prison chain link fence topped by razor wire. For another $362 million, the fence could be electrified. A larger 12-foot tall, two-foot-thick concrete wall painted on both sides would run about $2 billion. Initially it was estimated that the San Diego fence would cost $14 million — about $1 million a mile. The first 11 miles of the fence eventually cost $42 million — $3.8 million per mile, and the last 3.5 miles may cost even more since they cover more difficult terrain. The current crisis is Obama having declassified and released memos detailing the programs used to question al Qaeda suspects. Is water boarding torture, did it violate U.S. and international laws?  Has Obama has endangered the country by releasing CIA secrets.  Contradicting himself, he also said he would not necessarily oppose an effort to pursue a “further accounting” and investigation into the Bush-era interrogation program that included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, forced nudity, shoving people into walls and other methods.  You want to bet we’ll see a full blown investigation of the CIA Interrogation program that reveals more secrets for the terrorists to use against us? 

Even Donald Rumsfeld on a Larry King Interview prior to 911 said, “Well, we have to recognize that it’s a dangerous and untidy world. There’s a lot of very powerful, lethal weapons that exist and ways that people can impose enormous damage. And we have to be vigilant. I call foul. Everyone knew something was about to happen and all that Intel slipped through the cracks allowing the most horrific attack on U.S. soil since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.  Bush had more faulty Intel on Iraq.  We caught a few bad guys and even released some but when some piss ants cry foul about how we treat (-ed) enemy combatants, you have to wonder what information was gathered to prevent further incidents.  Why are members of Congress are doing a tight wire dance to relieve themselves of any association with interrogation procedures that not only did they know about, but worked.

Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, who in 2002 was the ranking Democrat on the House committee, has said in public statements that she recalls being briefed on the methods, including waterboarding. She insists, however, that the lawmakers were told only that the C.I.A. believed the methods were legal — not that they were going to be used.  By contrast, the ranking Republican on the House committee at the time, Porter J. Intel and congress knew attacks were imminent.  Intel and congress knew exactly what was happening at Guantanamo.  Peter J. Goss has the balls to actually admit that the information they got from torture, prevented further plans to destroy and attack America.    If acts of mental and physical ability to resist, resulted in saving American lives and halting the spread of terrorism, then so be it and Goss should be looked at as a hero not a scapegoat.

At the very least, if Obama wants to declassify details of the programs, he needs to declassify the findings as well.  By all accounts they acted legally within the interpretation of the law. I don’t have to like how they did it, but any future terrorist now knows that torture will not be a part of a deterrent to committing crimes against America. 

Transparency in America shouldn’t be good for the terrorists.

Kyrgyzstan Wants U.S. Out of Manas Base

Russia is putting it’s foot down and it isn’t in a gentle way. 

” Kyrgyzstan’s president said Tuesday his country is ending U.S. use of an air base key to military operations in Afghanistan- a decision with potentially grave consequences for U.S. efforts to put down surging Taliban and al-Qaida violence.

A U.S. military official in Afghanistan called President Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s statement “political positioning” and denied the U.S. presence at the Manas air base would end anytime soon.   The United States is preparing to deploy an additional 15,000 troops in Afghanistan and Manas is an important stopover for U.S. material and personnel.

Well isn’t that just special?  The Russians come, play war games and poke at us with Cuba and Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea, right off the U.S. coastline, and now want to end American presence at a key base just as we are about to increase troop presence.  Such timing.

Biden said Sunday that additional U.S. forces will be engaging the enemy more. Asked if that means the U.S. public should expect more American casualties, the vice president said: “I hate to say it, but yes, I think there will be. The United States set up the Manas base in Kyrgyzstan and a base in neighboring Uzbekistan after the September 2001 terror attacks, to back operations in Afghanistan. Uzbekistan expelled U.S. troops from the base on its territory in 2005 in a dispute over human rights issues, leaving Manas as the only U.S. military facility in the region.

Russia has long been suspicious of the U.S. presence in what it considers its strategic backyard and agreed Tuesday to provide Kyrgyzstan with $2 billion in loans plus another $150 million in financial aid.

Russia also uses a military airbase at Kant, Kyrgyzstan.

Obama’s Birth Certificate and Citizenship Goes to Conference at Supreme Court

Justice is alive and well in this country.  Leo Donofrio’s case that has been submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court regarding Obama’s citizenship has drawn the attention of Justice Clarence Thomas.  The case has been “distributed for conference,” on December 5, 2008.

The United States Supreme Court scheduled the case – Leo C. Donofrio v. Nina Mitchell Wells, Secretary of State of the State of New Jersey – US Supreme Court Docket No. 08A407 – for a conference of the nine Justices.  If four of the nine Justices vote to hear the case in full review, oral argument may be ordered.  The conference is scheduled for December 5, 2008, ten days before the meeting of the Electoral College. The case originally sought, pre-election, to have the names of Barack Obama, John McCain, and Roger Calero removed from New Jersey ballots, and for a stay of the “national election” pending Supreme Court review of whether those candidates were eligible under the Constitution as natural born Citizens, as is required by Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution of the United States.  On Nov. 19, the case was docketed for full conference of all nine Justices and scheduled for December 5, 2008  http://www.blogtext.org/naturalborncitizen/

Republican Candidate John McCain was born in Panama, Roger Calero, Socialist Worker Party was born in Nicaragua, and Barack Obama has not provided proof to a court where he was born.
