Martin Luther King, “I have a Dream.”

And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:
My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring!
And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.”  August 1963.

Is freedom ringing?

Criticism of color barely begins to describe what the American government did to pry into King’s personal life and so many others during the 50’s and 60’s. If you disagreed with the government, you were shall we say likely to have been, ‘looked after.’  Is it any different today?

From the Church Final Report-http://www.icdc.com/~paulwolf/cointelpro/churchfinalreportIIIb.htm

From December 1963 until his death in 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was the target of an intensive campaign by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to “neutralize” him as an effective civil rights leader. In the words of the man in charge of the FBI’s “war” against Dr. King:

No holds were barred. We have used [similar] techniques against Soviet agents. [The same methods were] brought home against any organization against which we were targeted. We did not differentiate. This is a rough, tough business. 1

The FBI collected information about Dr. King’s plans and activities through an extensive surveillance program, employing nearly every intelligence-gathering technique at the Bureau’s disposal. Wiretaps, which were initially approved by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, were maintained on Dr. King’s home telephone from October 1963 until mid-1965; the SCLC headquarter’s telephones were covered by wiretaps for an even longer period. Phones in the homes and offices of some of Dr. King’s close advisers were also wiretapped. The FBI has acknowledged 16 occasions on which microphones were hidden in Dr. King’s hotel and motel rooms in an “attempt” to obtain information about the “private activities of King and his advisers” for use to “completely discredit” them.

King spoke about the “Security of Justice,” and in this era of terrorism, it gives new meaning to the balance of security and justice.

COINTELPRO inserted spies into Martin Luther King Jr.’s inner circle to report on all his movements and activities, and it effectively destroyed the Black Panther Party by encouraging armed action against other black nationalist groups, smear campaigns against key members and outright targeted attacks. The result was that the group became splintered and the rest of the country didn’t take them seriously as a political force.

Even though COINTELPRO activities were exposed and banned by the ’70s, we still see little baby COINTELPRO efforts pop up today, like when the FBI targeted “domestic terrorist organizations” like Greenpeace and PETA along with evil Quakers. Or when one Obama adviser suggested infiltrating conspiracy theory message boards with secret agents who would discredit “false conspiracy theories about the government.” Because apparently, people on conspiracy theory message boards would never appreciate the irony.  Read more: http://www.cracked.com/article_18955_6-crackpot-conspiracy-theories-that-actually-happened_p2.html#ixzz1BEapsUlg

In 2011, where do we find the balance between privacy and security?  Was Dr. King really a threat? To what, to whom?  Is Assange of WIKI leaks fame a rapist, terrorist, journalist?  Facebook and Social Media certainly provide the opportunity for anyone or government to track your whereabouts.

Cookies used to be about sugar and flour, they are now about leaving a trail of crumbs on which websites you have visited.  How fast we learned about Jared Loughner and his erratic rants on YouTube, MySpace, etc. Here are just a few examples https://ahrcanum.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/giffordsshotpalin/.

Is it so humiliating to get felt up in the airport security line for the greater good? Tough call.  On the one hand, maybe an inspection of my, “junk” is a deterrent to evil shitheads.  On the other hand it seems to be a violation of the 4th Amendment, when there is no probable cause or reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.   More insulting, is that an airplane cargo hold likely gets less of an inspection than my junk.  Go figure.

Back to MLK.  We had the day off, schools and banks closed.  Many lived the American dream being good capitalists and spent the day at the mall using traceable debit and credit cards, facebooking our locations, tweeting the day away, going about our business while someone somewhere, if they really cared ran COINTELPRO on you.  Too bad someone didn’t connect the dots fast enough to Arizona to prevent the shooting spree.  Too bad someone didn’t connect the dots before the events of 911.  Maybe they did.

Even though COINTELPRO was supposed to have ceased long ago, both the Bush and Obama administrations have likely been utilizing what we’ll call, large scale information manipulation and monitoring.  Cass Sunstein heads up the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, where he oversees policy relating to privacy, information quality, and statistical programs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Sunstein

From Glenn Greenwood at Salon,http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/01/15/sunstein :

Sunstein advocates that the Government’s stealth infiltration should be accomplished by sending covert agents into “chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups.”  He also proposes that the Government make secret payments to so-called “independent” credible voices to bolster the Government’s messaging (on the ground that those who don’t believe government sources will be more inclined to listen to those who appear independent while secretly acting on behalf of the Government).

Whatever one wants to call intelligence these days, someone smart enough, if they wanted to:  knows where you are, what you are doing, what books you have bought on your Kindle or Amazon accounts, the books you have borrowed from the library, can find your address and phone number on Google, identify your computers IP address, knows what products you buy from your frequent shopper cards, can predict what your behavior might be, what memberships you may have in the NRA or YMCA, what your political party affiliation is, and on and on.

Are you old enough to remember “the party line, ” phone calls where you shared phone lines?  One could listen in, and someone could listen to you so you had to watch what you might say about Mrs. Spillane and Mr. DeLuca down the street.  Privacy was paramount.

What privacy we don’t give away today, someone tomorrow can sure find out.   Were MLK alive today, we wonder if he would champion civil liberties as much as he did civil rights.

Let freedom ring.

The Senate-passed bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote and is now on it’s way to President Obama’s desk for signing.

President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and senior staff, react in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, as the House passes the health care reform bill, March 21, 2010. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

“So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause.” – Senator Amidala

As previously noted at, https://ahrcanum.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/heath-care-reform-bill-vs-constitution/  the Health Care Bill has more pages than War and Peace, has nearly five times as many words as the Torah, and its tables of contents alone run far longer than this story…it clocks in at 1,990 pages and about 400,000 words. With an estimated 10-year cost of $894 billion, that comes out to about $2.24 million per word….Republicans aide said a print-out of the bill weighs more than 19 pounds and stands nearly nine inches tall.

How fast can Obama read it?  Will he even bother, or just sign it again avoiding the transparency he promised and repeatedly has broken?  The legislation still is not posted at http://www.whitehouse.gov/

The Obama Administration officially abandoned the President’s “Sunlight before Signing” campaign pledge [volokh.com] that the White House would post all legislation passed by Congress for at least five days before the President would sign it. In making this announcement, the Administration maintained that it would comply with the spirit, if not the letter, of the original commitment by posting legislation on the White House site once it became clear legislation would eventually pass and make it to the President’s desk. This new commitment, they suggested, would actually provide even greater sunlight, as some bills would be available for review earlier and for a longer time. Well, this promise is no longer operative either, as the Cato Institute’s Jim Harper details [www.cato-at-liberty.org]. http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read.php?40,211456,213807,quote=1

To provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans, Harry Reid http://reid.senate.gov/ has ensured that this can never be repealed. From an email we received:

Beginning on page 1,000 of the measure, Section 3403 reads in part: “it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.”

In other words, if President Barack Obama signs this measure into law, no future Senate or House will be able to change a single word of Section 3403, regardless whether future Americans or their representatives in Congress wish otherwise.
Note that the subsection at issue here concerns the regulatory power of the Independent Medicare Advisory Board (IMAB) to “reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending.”
“American Indians don’t have to buy Medical insurance; Those with religious objections or a financial hardship can also avoid the requirement according to http://twitter.com/Warof2010.”   I wonder if the millions of people participating in entitlement programs like Welfare will be exempt?

President Barack Obama's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, right, a native of Kenya, departs with an unidentified companion after requesting asylum at a closed immigration hearing Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, in Boston. Onyango, half-sister of Obama's late father, moved to the United States in 2000. Her first asylum request was rejected, and she was ordered deported in 2004. She didn't leave and continued to live in public housing in Boston. (AP Photo/Josh Reynolds)

Will  Obama’s Kenyan aunt Zeituni Onyango qualify for universal health care too?  Her pre-existing condition of Guillain-Barré syndrome would certainly be covered.  Is she still collecting benefits?  Wonder where she is living?
Obama said on the White House Blog, http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/03/22/what-change-looks  , “So this isn’t radical reform. But it is major reform. This legislation will not fix everything that ails our health care system. But it moves us decisively in the right direction. This is what change looks like.”

Voting For or Against The Bill

The NYTimes http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/03/22/us/politics/20100322-group-vote-chart.html today takes, “A look at some important groups in Sunday’s House vote to pass the health care bill approved by the Senate in December.”  It also lists each and everyone of the bastards that voted for this abomination.

President Obama is expected to sign the health care bill Tuesday at the earliest. Only then can the Senate begin dealing with the reconciliation package.  According to Senate rules, members are allowed to offer unlimited amendments and challenges to the reconciled bill….Boehner had said the revised health care bill was worse than the original legislation, adding that the “American people are going to hear about every payoff, every kickback and every sweetheart deal that comes out.” http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/03/22/senate.health.care.ahead/

As the Senate still has to sign off on the changes, every single member needs to read the U.S. Constitution, occupying four sheets of parchment, containing 4, 543 words that clearly outline why this piece of legislation is illegal.

U.S Constitution, Article I, Section VII, Clause II.

Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States; If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by Yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively

The majority of the American people object, Mr. President.

Just 41% of voters favor the plan while 54% are opposed. Those figures include 26% who Strongly Favor the plan and 45% who are Strongly Opposed. Most voters believe it will raise the cost of health care and reduce the quality of care. Still, nearly two-out-of-three voters believe it is at least somewhat likely to pass and become law.

From a political perspective, 50% of voters are less likely to vote for a Member of Congress who supports the health care reform plan proposed by the President and Congressional Democrats. Just 20% believe that most Members of Congress will understand the proposed health care bill before they vote on it.  via http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

As we understand it, a lot of elected officials had better understand they will be out of jobs come next election.

Clearly the idea of a quarantine is to keep the novel H1N1 Swine Flu disease from spreading to the rest of the population.  By all accounts, the CDC has stated that Swine Flu symptoms for the most part are no worse than the seasonal flu. Florida and Iowa are taking the lead in preparing documents for quarantining residents who have the H1N1 Swine Flu.

Mexico was quiet at the peak of Swine Flu with public gatherings prohibited and schools, museums, libraries and sports events canceled.  Will America be next as quarantine preparedness is taking place?

The greatest danger to American liberty is not Bird Flu or even our ludicrous lack of preparedness for natural and terrorist disasters. The greatest dangers to personal liberty lurk in the insidious encroachments by leaders who are well-meaning but without sufficient passion for the Constitution, and without sufficient honor to defend to the death each American citizen’s precious, vulnerable freedoms. quote is copyrighted by © 2005 Madeleine Cosman http://www.newswithviews.com/Cosman/madeleine15.htm

Iowa: HOME QUARANTINE ORDER

BEFORE THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH _____________________________________________________________________ DIRECTED TO: ) [insert case #] ) [insert full name and ) address of subject of order] ) HOME QUARANTINE ORDER _____________________________________________________________________ The Iowa Department of Public Health (Department) has determined that you have had contact with Novel Influenza A H1N1. Novel Influenza A H1N1 is a disease which is spread from person to person and is associated with fever (greater than 100.0 F), cough, sore throat, rhinorrhea (runny nose), nasal congestion, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Novel Influenza A H1N1 presents a risk of serious harm to public health and if it spreads in the community severe public health consequences may result. The Department has determined that home quarantine of persons who have been exposed to Novel Influenza A H1N1 is necessary to prevent further spread of this disease. The Department has determined that quarantine in private homes is the least restrictive means necessary to prevent the spread of Novel Influenza A H1N1. The Department is therefore ordering you to remain in your home and to comply with the following provisions during the entire period of quarantine: 1. Terms of confinement. You are ordered to remain in your home at _____________________[insert address] from ___________ to ____________[insert dates of quarantine]. 2. Requirements during confinement. During the period of quarantine:
a. You must not leave your home at any time unless you have received prior written authorization from the Department to do so.
b. You must remain reachable by telephone at all times and answer and respond fully and truthfully to telephone calls from Department staff and other persons acting on behalf of the Department.
c. You must not come into contact with anyone except the following persons:
(i) family members and other persons who reside in your home;
(ii) authorized healthcare providers; (iii) authorized Department staff or other persons acting on behalf of the Department; and (iv) such other persons as are authorized by the Department.
d. If family members or other persons who reside in your home have not been issued a Home Quarantine Order, they may leave your home to carry on their daily routines and to assist you with any needs you may have during the period of confinement. If you live alone, or if every
5/1/2009
member of your household is under Home Quarantine Order, you should arrange by telephone for relatives, neighbors, or friends to assist with any needs you may have during the period of confinement. These persons should not have direct contact with you. If you need assistance in providing for your daily needs, you should call [insert telephone number]
e. You must follow the directions contained in the attachment to this order labeled Attachment A to monitor your health status on a daily basis.
f. If you develop any symptoms of Novel Influenza A H1N1 detailed in Attachment A, including with fever (greater than 100.0 F), cough, sore throat, rhinorrhea (runny nose), nasal congestion, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, you should immediately call a public health official at [insert telephone number]. If emergency medical treatment is required for conditions other than those listed in this paragraph (e.g. chest pain or severe accidental injury at home), you should call 911 for an ambulance. When seeking such assistance, you must inform the operator of the 911 line and the ambulance that you are under Home Quarantine Order.
g. If other persons also reside in your home you must maintain good personal hygiene at all times, including complying with the directions contained in Attachment A, to prevent disease transmission. If any member of your household develops any symptoms of Novel Influenza A H1N1 detailed in Attachment A, such person should immediately call a public health official at [insert telephone number].
h. You should inform your employer that you are under home quarantine and are not authorized to physically come to the work place, although you may work from home via electronic or other means if appropriate. You should be aware that Iowa law prohibits an employer from firing, demoting, or otherwise discriminating against an employee due to the employee’s compliance with a quarantine order issued by the Department. (Iowa Code section 139A.13A).
