“The U.S. military wants to establish regional teams of military personnel to assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, according to Defense Department officials. The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The officials would not be identified because the proposal from U.S. Northern Command’s Gen. Victor Renuart has not been approved by the secretary.  The plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There is no final decision on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it would likely include personnel from all branches of the military.”http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/07/28/military.swine.flu/

“The military, as they would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients.”

What exactly would require air transport?  People.  Dead people, sick people, people who refuse a vaccination?

Where would the air transports go?  Remember the Federal Management Land Grab act that reduced access to huge chunks of America?  FEMA Camps?

We already have the local police, state police, federal police and soon the DoD Civilian Expeditionary Workforce Defense Directive 1404.10 (read  PDF ) promises exactly what President Obama said, “”We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

Is this all leading to Martial Law in the event that we see the Swine Flu begin to fry more people than bacon?   https://ahrcanum.wordpress.com/2009/06/25/martial-law-under-public-health-emergency/

The last reported numbers of the A/H1N1 Swine Flu from the CDC was 43,771 confirmed cases of H1N1 infection and 302 deaths in the United States.  The CDC and WHO both announced they would no longer keep records.

“Given that countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases, (to the WHO- World Health Org,)  the number of cases reported actually understates the real number of cases reported today July 27, 2009.”

816 deaths total?  300 or so in the U.S.? Even if the numbers were off by thousands, for a Pandemic- Swine Flu has been pretty tame, but that hasn’t put off our government from preparing to protecting her citizens.  The question is becomes, is the government protecting us from ourselves?

Like Al Gore claimed he invented the Internet, the U.S. Navy claims it worked behind the scenes to identify one of the first cases in the U.S. http://blogs.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2009/04/behind-the-scen.html.

“Our expansion was largely a result of an initiative by the Department of Defense’s (DOD’s) Global Emerging Infectious System to intensify pandemic surveillance as a result of the avian influenza (H5N1) crisis. NHRC augmented existing febrile respiratory illness surveillance programs in military recruit trainees and ship-board populations and expanded into dependent populations in San Diego. Also, in a collaborative effort with the CDC, we developed surveillance on the Southern California-Mexico border, which was enhanced this year to deepen surveillance and augment diagnostic training of our Mexican collaborators via funding from the Department of State’s Biosecurity Engagement Program.”

Augment Mexican collaborators- the same one’s who kept Swine Flu a secret for weeks?

You got that warm fuzzy feeling yet?

Flu maps look so pretty with all the colors.  My favorite is The Global Disease Health Map http://healthmap.org/swineflu.  It tracks everything from the seasonal and H1N1 Swine Flu to Chicken Pox, with only 8 cases reported.  Too bad every dot is disease. Rhiza Labs offers a map here http://www.swineflumap.us/.  Another here  http://swineflumaps.com/ , Pediatrics offers this http://pediatrics.about.com/od/swineflu/l/bl_swine_flu_map.htm, The Wall Journal Tracking map is here http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/info-SWINEFLUMAP0904.html, The New York Times map is here, http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/04/27/us/20090427-flu-update-graphic.html cbcnews Canada offers http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/04/27/f-swine-flu-map.html

Whatever map you select, the numbers of H1N1 Swine Flu will vary by source; but Victoria, Australia  now has the highest recorded per capita rate of swine flu in the world and is being blamed for exporting the virus around Australia. It has the fourth highest number of infections worldwide after the US, Mexico and Canada, but the highest per capita load. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25603115-2862,00.html?from=public_rss.  Sydney, Australia is reporting Patient One.  Six-year-old Nicholas Darcy is the recipient of the first Australian “community transmission” of swine flu – catching the disease from someone with no known links to a host country or source.  http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25548525-5001021,00.html?from=public_rss NO KNOWN LINKS is a pretty scary prospect.

While virus knows no borders, the number of new cases appears to be tapering off and I wonder if it is just the calm before the storm.  Previous flu outbreaks like H3N2  Hong Kong Flu, and the 1918 Spanish Flu had a tapering off period that led to full pandemic status. “New viruses sometimes arise late in spring, morph during the summer, and come back in the fall in a more virulent, severe strain says http://hamptonroads.com/2009/06/each-new-outbreak-medical-sleuth-case .

Epidemiology began in 1854, when London physician John Snow suggested removing the handle from a water pump after noting victims of a cholera outbreak had used it.

While sanitation and science is much improved to prevent H1N1 Swine Flu, are we still only 6 degrees from Kevin Bacon and the concept of the small world phenomenon? You’ve probably heard of the Six Degrees concept. Any one person (including  Kevin Bacon) is connected to any other person through six or fewer relationships, because it’s a small world.  A world so small that Swine Flu has reached nearly every Continent, save Greenland and Antarctica. A six year old provides proof he was not six degrees away from the flu.

SixDegrees.org harnesses two important online trends: the exponential growth of social networks and the increasing interest in using the web for raising money for charity among family and friends. Through SixDegrees.org, people can upload their own photos and stories and fundraise for the charity of their choice with their own charity badges and AIM Pages.  http://www.sixdegrees.org/ Truly worthwhile.

The trend of previous illnesses asks if  the strain will mutate and change to become more virulent; is it becoming resistant to anti-virals like  Tamiflu? Who is getting sick and where? How old are the infected?  What is the the death rate and infection rate?  How do we begin to deal with a massive outbreak?

No one is immune, even New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, who traveled on Friday to Shanghai, China, on an economic development trip, was informed early Sunday that a passenger on the airplane in which he was traveling was confirmed to have signs and symptoms of an influenza-like illness, suspected to be of the H1N1 — or swine flu — subtype.  He is in precautionary quarantine. http://www.wdsu.com/news/19683611/detail.html

Trust for America’s Health, The Center for Biosecurity, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation teamed up publishing a review of  the initial response to the swine flu called Pandemic Flu: Lessons from The Frontlines http://healthyamericans.org/report/64/pandemic-flu-frontlines that outlines some basic procedural maneuvering.  It reviews 10 early lessons learned from the response to the H1N1 (swine) flu outbreak, 10 ongoing core vulnerabilities in U.S. pandemic flu preparedness, and case studies of challenges communities around the country faced when responding to the outbreak.

Experts predict a severe pandemic flu outbreak could result in up to 1.9 million deaths in the United States, approximately 9.9 million Americans needing to be hospitalized, and an economic recession with losses of over $680 billion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product says TFAH- Trust for America’s Health http://healthyamericans.org/pandemic-flu/.   Recent economic challenges will be nothing compared to a full blown Pandemic.

State and Federal officials in the U.S. are proposing  S. 1143, http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-1143 a Public Health Workforce Act to to establish various programs for the recruitment and retention of public health workers and to eliminate critical public health workforce shortages in Federal, State, local, and tribal public health agencies and health centers.  I imagine this bills primary goal is make sure America has the people and resources to vaccinate to people with mass inoculations but in pure socialistic tendency, the bill “…may give hiring priority to any individual who has qualified for and is willing to execute a contract to participate in the Program.”  The private sector gets overlooked, yet again.

Obama begins his world tour to promote socialized government Healthcare with his Organizing For America group.  Obama recently asked Congress for another $2 billion in supplemental funds to fight the novel H1N1 influenza epidemic, on top of $2 billion requested a month ago, and also proposed to tap federal economic stimulus funds for up to another $3.1 billion for the same purpose according to CIDRAP –http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/swineflu/news/jun0509funding.html

Flu Wiki http://www.fluwikie.com/pmwiki.php?n=About.About shares flu knowledge support and extends information to advance both preparation for and the ability to cope with events as they unfold primarily without reliance on the government.

Sadly Alberta farmer Arnold Van Ginkel, whose swine farm was Ground Zero for the Influenza A (H1N1) in Canada voluntarily, culled all his 2,000 plus herd which was earlier quarantined by federal health authorities according to http://www.vitabeat.com/alberta-farmer-whose-swine-farm-started-influenza-a-h1n1-in-canada-culls-herd/v/10342/.  Again, so much for Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, this was just One.

Lastly, one bit of good news, a new H5N1 recombinant vaccine virus has been developed by the WHO Collaborating Centerhttp://www.thepoultrysite.com/poultrynews/17890/new-recombinant-h5n1-vaccine-virus-available.   Influenza sequences are available in GenBank as soon as they are processed at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genomes/FLU/SwineFlu.html .  Now if they can only identify how this all got started in the first place.

vaccinelogoEvery Child By Two (ECBT) was founded by Rosalynn Carter and Betty Bumpers in 1991 as a result of the Measles epidemic that killed over 120 people, many of them children. http://www.ecbt.org/ An epidemic that killed 120? My have times changed.  36,000 people died from the flu in the U.S. last year. 2000 are infected with Swine Flu- H1N1 and it is now deemed a level 5 Pandemic.

http://skepacabra.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/every-child-by-two-takes-their-message-to-congress/ said some deaths could be prevented had children been vaccinated, citing a recent HIB outbreak. Aside from a Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine shortage, there was a recall of the vaccine.  http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/shortages/default.htm

TWENTY FOUR immunizations by the age of 2 are listed on the recommended schedule.  Add three more shots-  One to combat annual seasonal influenza and two targeted at the new swine flu virus and the number grows to  TWENTY SEVEN shots by the age of  two.  It is ludicrous.   http://www.cispimmunize.org/IZSchedule_Childhood.pdf  The immune system can only take so much.  Currently, Merck Vaccines is experiencing a “not available for order” backlog for many of its popular vaccines including the Mumps and Rubella shots at http://www.merck.com/e-business/reports/MVC_Supply_Status.pdf  Why would standard immunization production be lagging?

My tin foil hat’s antennae are twisting-less people are getting vaccinated, yet the supply is exhausted.

A WSJ report says,” Parental doubts about the safety of childhood vaccinations are leading to outbreaks of largely eradicated diseases like measles and whooping cough, doctors warned in a new report http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124165229009493675.html.  “A lot of folks are counterculture-type independent thinkers [who] do not have faith in all the modern medicine-type stuff .” Counterculture?  Perhaps faith in the modern medicine type stuff of vaccines has to do with making an informed decision and about vaccine potential relationships to autism, recalls, efficacy rates, vaccines potentially causing the illness they were designed to prevent, and having guidelines that recommend twenty seven shots.

The American Pediatrics http://aap.org/advocacy/releases/may09vaccines.htm wants parents to have all the information they need to feel confident in their decision to immunize their children,…supporting  parents in making good health care decisions for their children, and vaccines are critical to our efforts to keep our children out of harm’s way.”  What kind of harm are we inflicting with 27 shots in two years?

Polio has all been eliminated.  Small pox eradicated, but  I am hardly confident with the vaccine license process and the large number of new vaccines on the horizon. The AAP has developed this information page on Red Book Online to provide current information about the licensure process and AAP recommendations about vaccines. http://aapredbook.aappublications.org/news/vaccstatus.shtml

An August 2008 APA Report  for Influenza Immunization in children http://www.cispimmunize.org/ill/Flu/Influenza%20Recommendations.pdf, and herehttp://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;122/5/1135  recommends ALL CHILDREN aged six months and older should receive the flu shot.  APA says that there is thimerosal in some forms of the flu vaccine but the benefits of protecting children against the known risks of influenza far outweigh the hypothetical risks associated with the minute amounts of thimerosal in some currently available forms of influenza vaccine.  Because viruses for vaccines are grown in eggs, neither should be administered to anyone with known allergic reactions (ie, hives, angioedema, allergic asthma, and systemic anaphylaxis) to chicken and egg proteins.”

Science has used eggs for years to grow vaccines but what if the eggs are from Avian Flu or H1N1 viral carriers?  The CDC’s own documentation shows reassortment of viruses in ducks, chickens, and turkeys- all egg layers.   Whether it is reverse genetics or creating a hybrid strain through a re-assortment of genes; vaccine work by tricking the immune system into thinking it has been infected with a virus so that it creates antibodies against it.” says the BBC.  It all sounds well and good until you think of the Legionnaire’s Swine Flu outbreak where the vaccine caused more deaths than the virus itself. Remember the Rota Virus vaccine scare that caused painful intestinal twisting?

What else is in a vaccine?  http://www.cispimmunize.org/pro/pdf/Vaccineingredients.pdf. Weakened live viruses, inactivated viruses, partial viruses, partial bacteria, preservatives, adjutants, additives, formaldehyde, antibiotics,….

The World Health Organization (WHO) will convene a group of experts May 14 to advise the agency on whether to pull the trigger on production of a vaccine for the novel H1N1 swine influenza virus.  http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/swineflu/news/may0609vaccine.html  The medical industrial complex and the the Obama administration is also talking about a second flu vaccine this year  (a series of two shots) in addition to the normal flu season vaccine. The second set of shots would be aimed against the  Swine Flu A/H1N1.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/05/AR2009050503378.html

Health officials have asked manufacturers to ramp up production of the seasonal vaccine scheduled for roll out this fall to make way for the possible mass production of a swine flu vaccine.  I wonder if  the recent shortages in common vaccines are due to the fact that manufacturers were already gearing up to make the switch to producing a H1N1 vaccine that they knew in advance would be a threat. “If they are asked to stop doing that it means there will be shortages of the normal (flu) seasonal vaccine and vulnerable people could be susceptible if there was an epidemic of ordinary flu this winter” says http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8029917.stm

The top 20 drug corporations and the industry’s two trade groups, PhRMA and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, which represents biomedicine companies must be frantic with their lobbying to encourage federal funding and authorization for the Swine Flu Shot.  I can see the education campaign now with commercials placed right in the middle of Anderson Cooper CNN’s report or an emergency broadcast alert in the middle of announcing the Idol winner.  How’s that for government propaganda?

Smallpox is the only human infectious disease to have been completely eradicated yet, “This press release at MSNBC discusses the intent of SIGA Technologies to respond to a recent U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) RFP for treatment courses for people infected with smallpox. This is the latest in a series of contracts related to preparations for outbreaks of diseases either due to biological attack or pandemics. In January the U.S. government teamed with Novartis to begin construction of a factory to produce flu vaccines in vast quantities. For almost twenty years the U.S. military has been buying and issuing anthrax vaccines and Emergent Biosolutions that produces that for them and other government agencies. SIGA states that the RFP calls for HHS to buy 1.7 million courses of antivirals with the possibility of up to 12 million being procured.” http://industry.bnet.com/government/1000812/us-government-to-stockpile-smallpox-antivirals/

The greater challenge will be tracking any adverse reactions as millions of Americans get multiple vaccinations in a matter of months this fall and winter. “There will be adverse effects to any vaccine. That’s just science,” said Michael Hattwick, who ran the CDC’s vaccine-tracking system during the last swine flu scare.  Clinically significant adverse events that follow immunization should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Guidance about how to obtain and complete a VAERS form is available at http://www.vaers.hhs.gov or by telephone, 800-822-7967.

I’ d rather take my chance with the flu than the flu shot.
