The Deepwater Horizon Spill in the Gulf Coast has become a cluster cluck. President Obama, a month after the leak started has decided that we now need a special commission headed by Ken Salazar, while Lisa P. Jackson, EPA Chief is headed back to the region for her third trip. http://dailycaller.com/2010/05/23/epa-chief-to-return-to-gulf-coast-to-monitor-spill/
The oil continues to flow, although BP is allegedly siphoning off some of the oil underground. BP claims 5,000 gallons per day since April 13 and finally a month later on May 20, it has been decided that the federal government will come up with its own determination of how much oil is gushing in the Gulf. Perhaps it should take its own water samples too.
“You know, it’s a shared responsibility, lots of things went wrong. There were multiple redundancies and fail-safe systems that were supposed to be in place that didn’t work,” said Salzar. http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/05/20/Salazar-Independent-oil-leak-rate-coming/UPI-41791274391760/
The EPA gave BP it’s okay to use chemical dispersants in an effort to corral and degrade some of the oil last week. By Thursday, the EPA issued a directive for BP to stop using the controversial Corexit dispersal chemical within 24 hours. https://ahrcanum.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/dispersants-epa-stops–
BP’s response was a pungent reminder of who is in charge, and it most certainly is not the EPA or and branch of the government. BP issued a terse reply, saying it would continue to use the controversial chemical Corexit despite the directive. BP officials believe that the leading alternative product, Sea Brat could pose a bigger risk over the long term.
NotanotherCONspiracy points out that the government has been spraying “stuff” for years and likely could, would, and may have sprayed the Gulf to attempt to break up the oil.

Democratic strategist James Carville and MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews, two reliable supporters of President Barack Obama, have issued withering critiques of the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill. Carville, the famously outspoken Louisianian who was a chief political aide to Bill and Hillary Clinton, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday that the administration’s response to the spill has been “lackadaisical” and that Obama was “naive” to trust BP to manage the massive clean-up effort. “The government should have stepped in and not just taken BP’s word,” declared Wayne Stone of Marathon, Fla., an avid diver who worries about the spill’s effect on the ecosystem….As simple as it may seem, the law prevents the government from just taking over, Allen said. After the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, Congress dictated that oil companies be responsible for dealing with major accidents – including paying for all cleanup – with oversight by federal agencies. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/22/frustration-mounts-as-oil_n_585913.html
Oversight by Federal Agencies- how laughable. Really, what’s one more law or promise broken by the government?
We do not have transparency from BP nor the EPA, nor do we have control over the cleanup. For heaven’s sake, some environmental group decided that throwing human hair on the slicks would help. BP has declined the offer. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127041062&ft=1&f=1025 (Human hair does help keep deer away from gardens though.)
BP chief Tony Hayward told the Associated Foreign Press, “everything we can see at the moment suggests that the overall environmental impact will be very, very modest.”
Could he be right? So far, reports are saying 154 sea turtles, 12 dolphins and 23 sea birds have been found dead. via http://www.huffingtonpost.com/edward-f-blizzard/bp-officials-downplay-imp_b_581787.html
In January and into February, I was there to witness –
A prolonged cold snap in Florida triggered a devastating and widespread saltwater and freshwater fish kill. Reports from around the state described dead fish floating in the water by the thousands up and down the coasts

Three favored off-road beaches and fishing spots – Cape Point in Buxton, South Ocracoke and the Bodie Island Spit at Oregon Inlet – were effectively closed to prepare for expected shorebird breeding. Large buffer zones preclude access by pedestrians and vehicles. http://hamptonroads.com/node/464263
