US health authorities on Friday announced plans for a massive vaccination campaign intended to protect millions of Americans, with the first distribution of 600,000 vaccine doses set for Tuesday, two weeks ahead of schedule. 

Part of the reason for the tepid enthusiasm may be that the vaccine campaign is being buffeted by political and social currents: wariness of mainstream medicine combined with suspicion of big government and a general unease and complacency about vaccines. The last massive government campaign in 1976 for Swine Flu was a significant failure with numerous reports of side effects including an increase in Guillain Barre Disease, GBS.

Dr. David Sencer, http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/30/swine.flu.1976/index.html head of the CDC at the time, devised and pushed the Swine Flu’s massive government campaign and claimed no one every told him that there were any dangers or links to the vaccine.  He continues to say that he defends the vaccination campaign that led to more deaths than the disease, but says he’s sorry for the people killed or sickened.

Dr. Michael Hattwick , then director of the surveillance team says there was absolute evidence that the vaccine had significant side effects and did tell his superiors. From an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes http://www.whale.to/vaccines/swine.html excerpted:

WALLACE: Dr Michael Hattwick directed the surveillance team for the swine flu program at the CDC. His job was to find out what possible complications could arise from taking the shot and to report his findings to those in charge. Did you know ahead of time, Dr Hattwick that there had been case reports of neurological disorders, neurological illness, apparently associated with the injection of influenza vaccine?

DR MICHAEL HNITWlCK: Absolutely

WALLACE: You did?

DR HATIWICK: Yes

WALLACE: How did you know that?

DR HATrwICK: By review of the literature.

WALLACE: So you told your superiors – the men in charge of the swine flu immunization program – about the possibility of neurological disorders?

DR RATTWICK: Absolutely

The government absolutely knew about the possibility of side effects in 1976.  You are sadly mistaken if you don’t think they know now, that the latest government approved H1N1 monovalent influenza vaccine will also have side effects.

The issue has caught the attention of the CDC’s Team B, a group of outside experts that the CDC has set up to critique and offer advice on the agency’s pandemic response.  Dr. David Sencer, who headed the CDC during the 1976 swine flu crisis, said via email that “it is likely that Team B will discuss” the data and the dilemma they pose. Other members of Team B are antiviral expert Dr. Frederick Hayden of the University of Virginia, Dr. Marc Lipsitch, an infectious diseases modelling expert from Harvard University, and Dr. Harvey Fineberg, head of the U.S. Institute of Medicine and author of the report on the 1976 swine flu affair. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090925/health/health_flu_vaccine_concerns

Wapo wrote, ” Billions of tax dollars have been paid to giant pharmaceutical companies. Millions of doses of vaccine are on their way to huge warehouses across the country.”  The full ingredients of the Swine Flu and seasonal vaccines are not disclosed on their patient inserts, but include thimerosal.  The Eli Lilly Protection Act ended up being repealed, but drug makers continue to be shielded from having to pay compensation for damages.

Indeed Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s Immunization director is correct when she says “this is just the beginning.”
