Jewel, The Black Bear!

A black bear named Jewel in Ely, Minnesota is apparently days- maybe hours away from giving birth to cubs in her den.  Way better than watching O.J. Simpson but just as addicting, you can watch her on a live webstream!

Bear researchers have put up a video camera inside her bear den so all the world can watch!  It’s infrared for night time viewing as well.  On Monday morning Jewel was doing what bears normally do in the winter, curl up in a ball and sleep.  Through the week though, Jewel has become more active, grooming herself, and fidigitting around, and well- let’s just say paying attention to down there.  We can’t take are eyes off this bear.  Its on ustream  http://www.ustream.tv/jewelblackbear where we warn you, you will become addicted.

Jewel is being observed as part of the Wildlife Research Institute, WRI where the research is focused on, “…improving coexistence between people and bears in an increasingly urbanized environment.” The North American Bear Center’s website is http://www.bear.org where you can also catch a live feed.  With a great opportunity being lost to share bear news on Twitter, WRI is “bearly” tweeting, @bearstudy.  WRI is using #jewel and #dencam to follow. UStream is interactive as always.

Being part of WRI, we’re not sure if that means she is on protected/unprotected federal or state land.  Maybe she is on private land?

Wonder what the names of the cubs will be.  Any ideas??  Maybe Obama’s daughters if there are two of them?  — ooooh, WRI should have run a contest to name them for publicity.  Baaahaa, win a free trip to MN- in the summer please.
