VOLCANO ASH CHAOS, ROYAL NAVY TO ASSIST
Volcanic eruptions from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier have wreaked havoc on European air traffic as the invisible, sometimes visible ash cloud has caused thousands of flights to be canceled.

Airlines complained that European governments were overreacting to the threat, relying on incomplete data from computer models rather than real-world safety tests in the air above Europe. In a blunt statement Sunday, representatives of Europe’s airlines and airports called for “an immediate reassessment of the present restrictions.”

Europe’s transportation ministers should take a look at the damage that can happen when a plane flies into the ash. This was no computer model for damage on an F-18 Hornet for The Finnish Air Force.
Five of the air force’s Hornets were involved in a training exercise on the morning of 15 April, just hours before the imposition of airspace restrictions due to the ash cloud spreading from a major volcanic eruption in Iceland.
One aircraft’s engines have been inspected so far using a boroscope, with melted ash clearly visible on its inside surface. Additionally from Brussels – A senior Western diplomat says several NATO F-16 fighters suffered engine damage after flying through the volcanic ash cloud covering large parts of Europe. European Union officials said air traffic could return to half its normal level on Monday if the dense cloud begins to dissipate. Germany allowed some flights to resume.

After more than five days of disruptions, The Royal Navy is coming to the rescue. Speaking after a meeting of the emergency planning committee Cobra, Gordon Brown said the HMS Ark Royal, HMS Albion, and HMS Ocean will all be mobilised. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8629270.stm “Our first priority is to avoid the inconvenience,” said Brown. So much for the priority of safety.
The HMS Ocean http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/operations-and-support/surface-fleet/assault-ships/hms-ocean/ is expected in port today, but where she will sail is anyone’s guess. One can only imagine the logistics of civilian personnel on a military vessels, say nothing of security precautions.
Where will all the soldier’s go that are aboard these crafts? Will they be armed as they assist passengers?
The Royal Navy has excelled in public relations ploys in the past.
The cash-strapped Royal Navy is planning a major merchandising campaign, stamping its world-famous White Ensign logo on everything from rum to underwear.
Senior commanders have approved a high-profile licensing strategy hoping the traditional cachet of the senior service will help sell ranges of clothing, toys, sports gear and drinks.
Despite the Navy having to scrap warships and aircraft due to budget pressures officials insist the move into merchandising is designed to boost its public profile rather than raise desperately-needed funds, and profits will be ploughed back into public relations rather than paying for combat capability. The inconvenience is, that governments are ill prepared for such natural or man-made catastrophes. On the date of 9-11, the military was running drills and thought that the planes flying into the WTC were merely a drill. Poor mobilization of assistance and coordination of communications, cost thousands of lives. The same lack of efforts by government officials can been seen as far back as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and as recent as Haiti where thousands still live on mud floors awaiting assistance.
At least the Icelandic Met Office issued a slight sigh of relief yesterday:
IMO’s radar near Keflavik has not detected the plume from Eyjafjallajökull since 08 o’clock this morning (sunday), which implies that it is below 10,000 feet (3 km).
