The Pavlik vs Martinez boxing match on HBO proved to be one of the best televised boxing matches in years! Thank you Top Rank!
Sergio Martinez, the WBC super welterweight champion, faced Kelly Pavlik, middleweight champion of the WBC and WBO tonight.
12 Rounds of pugilism at it’s best with each fighter fighting his own fight.
Martinez first cut Pavlik’s right eye then Martinez fell to the canvas, but not before blooding Pavlik’s other eye by the end of the fight making Martinez’s shots nearly impossible to see.
In the end, Martinez was declared victorious by a unanimous decision; even though the scoring was a bit differing among the judges and the fact that Martinez kissed the canvas at one point.
Pavlik is from Youngstown, Ohio as are former boxers Ray Mancini and Harry Arroyo among others. Standing tall, and with the grace of good sportsmanship Pavlik said after the final decision, ” Fighters are like sharks, they see blood and go after it.”
The fins of Martinez hands had no problems circling Pavlik’s face in the latter rounds, drawing blood.
There is a rematch clause in this fight contract. You can bet your bottom dollar Bob Arum is not going to go the HBO route again when pay per view is much more lucrative.
No shame for Kelly Pavlik. He earned every dime today.
