WTF is this photo from Google? Herbert George Wells better known as H.G Wells, one of the founders of modern science fiction would be 143 years young today.
Google has explained the presence of UFO and crop circle doodles on its main page, saying they put were to mark the birthday of British author H.G. Wells. sourced at http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2009/09/21/Google-celebrates-HG-Wells-birthday/UPI-12951253575998/
The search engine said on its official blog Monday the images were inspired by Wells’ novel “The War of the Worlds” and were posted to the Web site to mark the 143rd anniversary of the author’s birth in Bromley, England, the Daily Mail reported Monday.
The company said the UFO and crop circle logo was the last part in a series of clues hidden within the Google main page logo starting Sept. 5.
“Now, we’re finally acknowledging the reason for the doodles with an official nod to Herbert George, who would be 143 years old today,” the official Google blog read Monday. “The invasion of the logo by alien crafts and pods makes our series complete, but you’ll have to read the book to find out how Wells’ story really ends.”
The story ends with this photo that probably had good intentions, but when minimized- looks like farm barf.
Most famous for the 1938 radio panic- Halloween, October 30, 1938
What radio listeners heard that night was an adaptation, by Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater group, of a science fiction novel written 40 years earlier: The War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells. However, the radio play, narrated by Orson Welles, had been written and performed to sound like a real news broadcast about an invasion from Mars. Thousands of people, believing they were under attack by Martians, flooded newspaper offices and radio and police stations with calls, asking how to flee their city or how they should protect themselves from “gas raids.” Scores of adults reportedly required medical treatment for shock and hysteria. The hoax worked, historians say, because the broadcast authentically simulated how radio worked in an emergency.http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/06/0617_050617_warworlds.html
Tune in to the National Geographic Channel’s Time Machine on Thursday, September 24 at 11 a.m. for more about his inventions that while not invented doesn’t mean we don’t have the technology to do so.
Years later here the world is: under attack from H1N1 Swine Flu, Avian Flu, Vaccinations, War, Cancer, etc., where are those damned Martians and H.G. Wells when you need them?
